The Shapeless One

The Shapeless One, also known as Comte de Saint Germain or simply "Teacher," is a character in Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He is the patriarch of the vampire House of de Sade and the mentor/guardian of protagonist Noé Archiviste.

The Shapeless One is extremely old, even among vampires, and once worked as the right hand of the Queen. He has since withdrawn himself from politics, but is still infamous for both his power and his caprice. He frequently changes his name and face to suit his mood, violently refuting anyone who refers to him incorrectly. For reasons as yet unknown, he also seems to have a penchant for collecting troubled and/or powerful children. The Marquis de Sade is his adopted son, and he later volunteered to raise both his grandson Louis and the orphaned Noé.

Overview

Appearance

In his current form, The Shapeless One is a tall, thin adult man of indeterminate age. He generally wears a black suit and top hat over a white shirt with a band collar. The left breast of his suitcoat is decorated with a large, ornate brooch. The main body of the brooch is a golden frame containing a silver mirror with a large, splintering crack that runs across it. The left side of the brooch has multiple golden wings sprouting from it, the tallest reaching up past the The Shapeless One's shoulder. What appear to be ropes or chains hang from the bottom of the brooch, with one visible loop and both ends dangling downward.¹

In every appearance so far, The Shapeless One is always smiling.
