The Case Study of Vanitas Volume 1 is the first collected volume of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. It was published on April 22, 2016 and contains mémoires 1-4.
The front cover shows the character Vanitas sitting inside an ornate golden frame. The frame is covered in motifs common in Vanitas still life paintings. The frame's carvings include: bones, including skulls and outstretched hands; a crown (atop the central skull); butterflies; flowers (lilies, roses, dandelions, and chrysanthemums); thorn-covered vines; and pomegranate halves. There are also several more abstract bone and plant-like flourishes. Vanitas himself is perched on the bottom of the frame, sitting with his left leg crossed over his right and leaning his left elbow against his thigh. His face is lefting against his left hand, and in his right hand, he holds up The Book of Vanitas. He's only wearing one sleeve of his coat, and the left half of his coat, the bow of his belt, and the chain of the Book all dangle from the bottom of the frame along with Vanitas's legs. The space around the frame is stark white, with two ornate golden gears outlined in the background.
